US leads the way as protectionism threatens global trade

Protectionism could harm global trade after it was revealed that more than 460 new protectionist measures were brought in throughout the world in 2017, according to Euler Hermes. The US remains the world's most protectionist trading nation, having implemented 401 new measures since 2014, followed by India (293) and Russia (247). The US was also the only nation in the top ten ranking to increase the number of new measures implemented between 2016 and 2017, introducing 90 trade barriers, including 18 against Canada, 17 against China, and two against Mexico.
